Timeless Wisdom from the Bible

Day 1 of 40

A daily dose of timeless biblical wisdom.

Day 1:  The Proof of Love

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” —John 15:13

How can you prove that you love someone? Philosophers have tried. So have novelists. Women have endeavored to do so, as have men. It’s a real challenge to prove love. People try by using words, giving gifts, performing acts of service, and even sacrificing part of their personal wants and desires for the sake of another. But there might be an ultimate demonstration of love, proof that is undeniable in its finality: giving up one’s life for another.

Do you know a love so strong? God loves you that much. God’s son, Jesus, died to give us personal, direct access to God for eternity. He didn’t do it for the headline. Or to start a religion. He did it simply because he loves you and wants spend to eternity with you.

You might experience love in many ways, in many forms. But giving one’s life for love? There’s no better proof.

Consider This:

  • How does God love someone who claims not to love God?
  • What kind of love would Jesus have to have in order to die for you?

Take Action:

If you are in a relationship of love, write a love letter to that person, describing how you are certain that you are loved. If you don’t have such a relationship, write a love letter to an acquaintance who has shown you great love.
