30 Days: Sample Day 1

“Relying on God has to start all over every day, as if nothing has yet been done.” —C. S. Lewis

Consider a marriage: The two partners gave their hearts to each other. Imagine the reaction of a spouse if the other stops doing anything to nurture the relationship. It won’t be long before lukewarm feelings turn ice-cold and the couple discovers a canyon of separation. A marriage must be continuously cultivated, with each partner repeatedly committing to overcoming their own selfishness. This commitment has to start all over every day.

The same goes for our relationship with God. Each day we must overcome our pride and recommit to relying faithfully on God. But thankfully, God is also working on his relationship with us every day! The Bible tells us, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22–23).

Just as our reliance on God must, God’s mercy toward us starts over anew every day. The relationship is so much easier when both parties are working on it. He is just as committed to us now as he was from the very beginning.

Consider This

  • Godly love is a decision, not merely an emotion. What does this mean?
  • How might God handle the issues in your various relationships?

Take Action

Write a letter to someone with whom you have a relationship (it doesn’t have to be a romantic relationship). Tell them what you love about them.
