Hope For the Guilty

Golden Nugget: “He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.”

Daily Verse: “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” —Isaiah 53:5

Daily Message:
Someone caught in the act of a crime is often described as one who is “caught red-handed.” Whether you’re a child taking a cookie without permission or an employee trapped in a lie, getting caught feels terrible.

Have you ever wondered where the phrase “caught red-handed” came from? It was once used to describe someone who committed a murder—the proof of their guilt was so obvious that it was as if red blood was on their hands (or the blood was actually on their hands).

The Bible teaches that we are deeply flawed and incredibly sinful people—and the evidence to confirm this is pretty overwhelming. A breakthrough waits for those of us who will accept the fact that the God of the universe has caught us red-handed!

Is there hope for us? In today’s verse, Isaiah answered with a resounding yes. Disturbed and broken people were and still are Jesus’ mission. He died for guilty, red-handed people. Amazingly, we committed the sin, but Jesus Christ took the punishment.

Consider This:

  • What actions do you find yourself defending or denying?
  • What are your barriers to embracing Christ’s payment for your wrongdoings?

Take Action:
Identify something you did wrong that causes you to feel guilty. Ask Jesus to forgive you and free you from guilt today.
