Rejoicing in God Helps Relieve Stress and Anxiety

Golden Nugget: Ask God for help. He’s available and desires to help you!

Daily Message:

It is very difficult for me to ask for help. Growing up, a strong family rule dictated that you not ask for help until you had exhausted every resource on your own—or at least I interpreted it that way. So my tendency is not to ask for help. When I do, I’m embarrassed. My wife’s solution is to request help from the beginning. Frequently she’ll inquire as to if I’ve asked anyone for help, knowing the answer is, of course, no.

But life is very hard to face without help. In fact, we all need help sometimes. Philippians 4:4–7 reminds us to “rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

I wish that had been the rule I had adopted from childhood: Ask God for help. You don’t have to do it all on your own.

Consider This:

  • What rules—whether conscious or subconscious—do you have about asking for help?
  • Do you allow others to help you? In what ways?
  • With what things do you currently need to ask for God’s help?

Take Action:

Take time to pray right now. If you’re not comfortable praying on your own, use this as a launching pad: God, you are the almighty and you know me completely. I rejoice in your power. Please help me deal with the pain of ______________ in my life. Help me to keep my focus on you and the plan and mission you have for my life. Use me for your sake. Help me to overcome the struggle of ________________ in my thoughts and _________________ in my behaviors. Forgive me of my sins. Please give me the peace that transcends all understanding. Amen.
