Day 1:  Plan Your Money

Some say, “Easy come, easy go,” but it doesn't have to be that way. If we plan how we spend our money, we'll actually keep more of it!

“The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.” —Proverbs 21:5

There is a great sense of satisfaction when we work hard and collect our paychecks. It’s a good feeling to check the bank account on payday and see that direct deposit. And what about those moments when we receive a tax refund check or get an unexpected financial gain? Euphoria!

Bask in those emotions for a while, but before you start spending, plan. Strategically determine how you are going to pay bills, save money, and have a good time.

It is so easy to receive money, get excited, and spend it all in haste. Before you know it, the money is gone. But you can escape this exhausting cycle: simply make the effort to diligently plan how you are going to spend your money—both now and in the future.

Planning out your funds will enable you to have more of them in the long run. Plan and save, because those good times will feel even sweeter when you do.

Consider This:

  1. What would it feel like to have a savings reserve equal to or greater than six months of your expenses?
  2. If you don’t have a six-month reserve, what is a first step you can take to help get you there?

Take Action:

As you anticipate your next paycheck, prepare a simple budget in order to track and manage your funds. The budget doesn’t have to be complicated, but it will hold you more accountable to yourself.
