Day 1:  The Power to Change Lives

Forgiveness is a powerful tool that can soften and transform the heart.

“Forgiveness is the key which unlocks the door of resentment and the handcuffs of hatred. It breaks the chains of bitterness and shackles of selfishness.” —Corrie Ten Boom

Are you familiar with the novel-turned-musical Les Misérables? It is the compelling story of a thief whose life is transformed by one act of love and forgiveness. This thief, Jean Valjean, embodies all the admirable traits of a hero: strength, courage, love, loyalty, truth, commitment to a cause. He is merciful and forgiving. But he was not always this way.

He was once an angry man. Poor, starving, and resentful, he blamed society for his situation. He was sentenced to twenty years’ hard labor for stealing a loaf of bread. But during his parole, his life is changed forever by a merciful gentleman.

Even after Valjean steals from him, this man forgives him. After this incident, Valjean, a hardened criminal, softens and is motivated to change, giving us a dramatic picture of the power of forgiveness.

Consider This:

  1. What does it feel like to be forgiven when you know you don’t deserve it?
  2. Is there anyone to whom you can offer forgiveness?  What impact might that have on them?

Take Action:

Think about the power forgiveness has to motivate people to change. Look for places where you might extend forgiveness to others, and watch for the results!
